The 82nd Avenue Coalition gathered at PCC’s 82nd Avenue campus to hear a presentation from Metro and Trimet about the potential Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project along 82nd Avenue. They discussed the key features of the project, such as stop locations and reductions, the northern and southern termini, and how much space on the roadway would be dedicated to the bus. A few of the key themes/questions brought up by Coalition members included:
  • Concerns about stop spacing with an eye toward walking conditions along 82nd and maintaining 82nd Ave as a destination, not just a through street
  • Specific questions about how much lane space would be dedicated to the bus, how that would affect performance, and what impacts that would have on vehicle throughput and diversion of vehicles onto neighborhood streets
  • Concerns about the lack of sidewalks and finished/paved side streets that may have additional vehicular traffic as a result of diversion
  • Concerns not just about climate, but about air and noise pollution of large buses. Questions about full electrification of these buses.
  • Questions about connections and transfers all along the corridor, but especially in the northern portion
Thanks to all who came out and thanks to Elizabeth and Michael for their time presenting!

Hello friends,

The last 82nd Avenue Coalition was a success with deep and meaningful conversations. Thanks to The Grotto for hosting us at their beautiful site.

Guided by the values and goals we have identified in previous coalition gatherings, we are now looking to formalize our structure and invite individuals and organizations to become formal coalition members. Keep an eye out for our charter document and an invitation to join!

Additionally, we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Metro and PBOT for a series of neighborhood-specific conversations. From late spring to fall, we will be holding discussions about the PBOT 82nd Ave project, a proposed transit project, equitable development and anti-displacement, and the resources that each neighborhood needs. We look forward to continuing our work together to create positive change along 82nd Avenue.

This week the 82nd Ave Coalition teamed up with Multnomah County Commissioner Vega Pederson, State Representative Pham, Metro Councilor Hwang, and Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) staff for a walk along 82nd from Foster to Bybee, over to Glenwood Park, and back.

It was an opportunity to discuss some of the coming infrastructure improvements as well as goals for future investment as PBOT works on Building a Better 82nd Avenue. Follow the link to learn more about the project and take their survey.

If you want to become more involved with advocacy along 82nd Avenue, join our coalition! We are raising the community’s voice as decisions are made the impact 82nd Avenue. If interested, email Zachary at zachary@oregonwalks.org
