Job Title: Community Events Manager

Location: Portland, Oregon

Time: Half to full time position

We believe in the power of walking to improve both individual well-being and general quality of life within our communities, and it’s good for the environment. In our work toward that mission, we are seeking a Community Events Manager to help lead our community programming initiatives.

Position Summary:

The Community Events Manager at Oregon Walks is responsible for developing, organizing, and leading a variety of programs. The two primary goals are: (1) the development of walks with partner organizations and (2) hosting walking events with higher density housing providers aimed at supporting community members to access more in their neighborhood by foot. This role promotes pedestrian advocacy, safety, and health, as well as reducing vehicle miles traveled, while also building a sense of community around walking.

This position works from home. However, programming occurs regularly in-person in the Portland Metro area, so living in the Portland Metro area is necessary.

Oregon Walks is a very small organization! This means, our employees have to be a “jack of all trades” who can lend a hand on social media, advocacy, administrative tasks, etc.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Program Development:
    • Partner with local housing providers to host “Where Can You Walk?” events
    • Collaborate with partner organizations to design and develop walking programs
    • Research and identify community needs, preferences, and interests to create innovative and engaging walking initiatives
    • Work with organizational leadership to develop program goals, objectives, and future programming
  2. Program Coordination:
    • Plan and organize a diverse range of walking events, including group walks, educational walks, advocacy walks, and membership walks
    • Oversee all logistical aspects of events, including route planning, safety protocols, permits, and participant registration
  3. Community Engagement:
    • Build and nurture partnerships with community organizations, schools, local businesses, and government agencies to expand the reach of walking programs
    • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers to assist with program coordination and promotion
  4. Outreach and Promotion:
    • Develop and implement marketing and outreach strategies to raise awareness of walking programs within the community
    • Utilize various communication channels, including social media, newsletters, and public speaking, to promote the benefits of walking
  5. Data Management and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of program participation, feedback, and impact
    • Prepare regular reports for the organization's leadership and stakeholders, demonstrating the success and growth of walking programs

Qualifications:

  • Passion for walking and the promotion of pedestrian-friendly communities
  • Experience in program development, event planning, and community engagement
  • The knowledge and personality to host events, namely excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Organized with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Multilingual
  • Knowledge of Oregon communities and the unique needs of diverse populations

Job Title: ‘Speed Kills’ Education Campaign Lead

Location: Portland, Oregon

Time: Half to full time position, contract ends September 30th, 2024 with potential to extend

Oregon Walks is dedicated to promoting walking and making the conditions for walking safe, convenient and attractive throughout Oregon. We believe in the power of walking to improve both individual well-being and general quality of life within our communities, and it’s good for the environment. In our work toward that mission, a year-long position as the ‘Speed Kills’ Education Campaign lead that will organize an educational and social media campaign teaching the public about the harms of increased vehicle speed on pedestrian safety.

Position Summary:

The ‘Speed Kills’ Education Campaign lead is responsible for engaging youth in our community about the harm of increased vehicular speed on pedestrian safety. This person will engage middle, high, and college students, encouraging and assisting them in creating social media content about this topic. This position will then manage a social media campaign that promotes the work of these students.

This position works from home. However, programming occurs regularly in-person in schools in the Portland Metro area. Therefore, living in the Portland Metro area is necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Youth Engagement:
    • The ability to connect with students is critical! This position will require communicating and connecting with youth about the topic of traffic safety and in the creation of social media content
  2. Working With Schools:
    • This position will communicate with school staff to identify how and when to interface with students. This includes navigating school protocols to serve as a volunteer and guest
  3. Social Media:
    • This position requires engagement with people online through social media
  4. Outreach and Promotion:
    • This position requires outreach to communities, especially schools. It also requires outreach to traditional media and local community leaders to engage them in this project

Qualifications:

  • Passion for walking and the promotion of pedestrian-friendly communities
  • Experience in teaching and/or working with youth
  • The knowledge and personality to teach student groups, including excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Organized with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Tech savvy: knowledge of marketing tactics and social media

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Multilingual
  • Knowledge of Oregon educational communities
