Economics of Walking

If you’re looking to cut back on your transportation budget, you really can’t get any cheaper than walking. Driving costs often eat up more of a household’s budget than expected. Places that have a variety of convenient transportation options allow residents to save money overall by not driving (link).

Making neighborhoods more walkable can also benefit the local economy. Retail businesses may benefit from increased pedestrian activity (link). When people spend less on transportation because they’re driving less, much of that money (which would have gone out of Oregon, because we don’t build cars or produce gas here) is spent locally instead (link). Walking for transportation is a win-win for you and your community!
