2017 Weston Legacy Award Winner: Steve Bozzone

Steve Bozzone has been helping steward grassroots transportation advocacy efforts in Oregon for almost 10 years, and has served on the Oregon Walks Board for the past seven years. His commitment to creating safe streets and more just communities is unmatched by many, and we are excited to honor this tenure of work with this year's Weston Legacy Award.

Steve moved to Portland in 2008 with his partner Colleen. After working in youth development organizations in North Philly & Camden, New Jersey and later youth homeless services in Portland; he started a web design business and decided to dedicate his free time to active transportation advocacy.

Steve’s first local projects included creating a series of Public Service Announcement videos encouraging safer and kinder cycling habits on Portland’s bikeways, as well as documenting unsafe crossings for people on foot.

Steve has also participated on a number of committees for Oregon Walks, AROW, and the Community Alliance of Tenants - including the Williams Ave Transportation Safety, 20s Bikeway, N/NE Quadrant Plan & Portland Central City Parking Policy.

After attending an Oregon Walks annual membership meeting, Steve joined the Oregon Walks Board of Directors in 2010 where he continues to serve as a Member-At-Large. During this time Steve facilitated the re-branding of the organization from Willamette Pedestrian Coalition to Oregon Walks, the creation of the Weston Awards and a new website, oversaw several major staff and board transitions, hired new staff, supported advocacy campaigns and legislative victories, and helped steward the organization’s strategic direction toward achieving more equitable outcomes for communities of color and historically underserved neighborhoods throughout Oregon.

As Steve heads to the end of his last term as an Oregon Walks Board member, he is more excited than anyone to see Oregon Walks thriving and growing and is particularly proud of the work staff, members and volunteers have put into building power in Portland & Salem with partner organizations including OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon, Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon, and the Community Cycling Center. Steve would like to extend special thanks for many years of mentoring and friendship to former Executive Director Steph Routh, current Executive Director Noel Mickelberry and Oregon Walks Board presidents Margaret Weddell, Aaron Brown and Fiona Yau-Luu.

What are the Weston Awards?

The Weston Awards celebrate inspiration, enthusiasm, perseverance, and the conviction that getting around on foot should be safe and accessible for everyone.

Join us for a special evening celebrating our shared work advocating for walkable communities and the Westons among us today: people from all walks of life who have made our communities more livable and more walkable.

This is the 7th year of the annual Weston Award fundraiser to support the work of Oregon Walks. We bring together over 250 people who care deeply about supporting walkable communities across the state.

We hope you'll be one of them at this year's big event!
